Hold the Phone!

So I'm channel surfing and I happen to run across the Democratic debate on CNN. The main topic at the moment was immigration; one topic that has not been brought up a lot in our recent discussions with the candidates. Now, why the "I'm really surprised" topic? Apparently, senator Obama actually supports the idea of letting illegal immigrants obtain driver's licenses. Umm...hello? Is Senator Obama not aware that someone already tried this in California? The Governator handed the smack down on this bill. What makes Obama suddenly think that if he becomes President, it will happen?

Cripes, this may not bode well for the Senator.

Update: So after the commercial break, Obama modified his statement, saying that "I believe that the license issue shouldn't be a problem if we have a comprehensive immigration policy. People come here to work, not to drive."

I think the immigrant issue is more a Republican issue in California. The economy both depends and despises migrant workers. Agriculture has depended on migrant workers forever, but Republicans don't like people staying in the country, I guess becuase they absorb resources and put a strain on public benefits. This is just a guess as I'm not a Republican nor feel that we pay enough taxes. We should pay more taxes since that what a successful country does when establishing social welfare or public benefits. I digress, but, yeah, for Democrats I heard through independent radio media coverage that the economy and the war in Iraq takes precedent. It seems like a majority of Dems see immigration as a good thing, but that is my perspective, and for what reasons I'm unsure. I think Californians as a whole tend to be more conservative than liberal, but there are some geographic spots where liberalism is widely leftist and progressive.

The point I forgot to make is that a good population of agricultural businesses are Republican, at least according to stats and what's available in the media. So... it's kinda a catch 22 for the Republican agricultural economy. I know thousands of farmers felt the hit on migrant labor shortages this past harvest season.
